Exploring the Patterns in Nature
A collaborative project that brought together students and professors from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Kyoto University, and Kagoshima University.
The main topic of the workshop was patterns in nature, representing the result of a synthesis process where form responds to a series of structural and environmental requirements. In this intensive workshop, we aimed to explore the architectural potential of natural patterns, using their geometric and functional principles for the design and construction of a bioclimatic shelter.
The workshop lasted seven active days. After two introductory days learning Grasshopper basics with Professor Martin, we split into design groups to develop prototypes. Arisha guided us through laser cutting, and each team presented their ideas. The most buildable design was chosen, combining the best concepts from all groups. From there, we refined it into a functional parametric model. Finding the right joint solution for the full-scale pavilion was the biggest challenge, far more complex than the 1:20 prototypes. New teams formed to finalize the form, patterns, and joinery, with students from Trondheim, Kagoshima, and Kyoto all contributing. Inspired by the Norwegian gapahuk and Japanese wave patterns, we aimed to keep everything unified despite the fast-paced, collaborative chaos.
Soon after, the most exciting part began , CNC cutting and assembling the pavilion. More than 30 panels were cut, sanded, and numbered, with plenty of help from our professors and some much-needed pizza breaks. We sanded, painted, and prepared each element, giving it both beauty and weather protection. As the deadline approached, we gathered in the workshop, fixing mistakes and pushing through time pressure. Rain briefly stopped our work, softening the paint, but once it cleared, we returned to assembling. With teamwork, determination, and a few wooden supports, our pavilion finally started to take shape.
